The breath-taking "Rope Road" crosses Santo Antão from south to north, connecting Porto Novo to Ribeira Grande. The cobbled road climbs from sea level to an altitude of 1 200m, then runs along a ridge balanced on peaks of 1 000m before descending to the coast. Terraced crops, lush forests, basaltic peaks, corries and canyons: the route crosses 36km of the island's most spectacular landscapes, such as the Caldeira de Cova, a cultivated volcanic crater.
