The Michelin Guide's review
The levada was built in the 18C to irrigate the farmland of the Faial region. At 980m above sea level, it follows a spectacular path that is partly hewn out of the rock face, heads into a Laurisilva of Madeira forest rich in tree heath, and crosses through 4 tunnels. It then runs along impressive ravines and emerges in front of a lake supplied by a high waterfall. Should you wish to explore it, a hiking trail starts out from Queimadas Forest Park (13km round trip, 5hr 30min, moderately difficult).
