Chalkidiki's major political centre in the 5C and 4C BC, ancient Olynthus distinguishes itself by its grid layout inherited from the Classical period and its mosaics, the finest of which are those of the Bellerophon House and the Villa of Good Fortune. Well preserved, the layout of its streets feature among the best examples of ancient town planning in the Mediterranean. The vestiges spread over 3ha, straddling two small hills.
