The Michelin Guide's review
Built by engineer Virard in the early 20C, Viaduc des Fades is over 440m long and one of the highest railway viaducts in Europe. Its metal deck is supported by two granite piers spaced 144m apart and 92m tall. It looms 133m over the Sioule River. Upstream, another structure will catch your attention: the Barrage de Besserve, a gravity dam with an 8m-wide crest, which holds back the water by virtue of its mass.
