The Michelin Guide's review
A good example of military architecture, this bridge was part of the second set of ramparts built in the 13C to defend the town entrance from the River Scheldt. In 1948, the bridge was heightened by 2.4m to ease access for river traffic. A radical transformation of the bridge is now planned that will, if it goes ahead, allow barges and boats of over 2 000t to pass under the bridge. The much-criticised project will retain the towers, while a single metal arch will replace the three old arches.
