The Michelin Guide's review
This tunnel was created in 1967 to relieve congestion in the Maastunnel, which had proved unable to cope with the spectacular increases in traffic. The tunnel links the two banks of the river and avoids the centre of town, reducing traffic jams. In 2002, renovation work was carried out to introduce a cycle lane, a footpath for pedestrians and a metro line.
