The Michelin Guide's review
Jerba is home to the largest Jewish community in Tunisia, and El-Ghriba is one of the most famous places of Jewish worship in North Africa, and perhaps even the oldest site of a synagogue in the world. The present building dates from the early 20C, but the site has been used for worship since the 6C BC. It comprises two rooms decorated with ceramics and blue-shaded columns, and is said to contain the oldest recorded Torah in the world. The major pilgrimage which takes place here every year is one of the island's main events.
