The Michelin Guide's review
Located in a formerly fertile, but now arid region, the site of Nemrut Dagi is striking, almost tragic. In front of a tumulus of broken stones (150m in diameter and 50m high), are three terraces. Two of these are guarded by five stone colossuses, among whom Antiochus 1 (69-34 BC), king of Commagene who had the sanctuary built to his own glory. The colossuses, overturned by earthquakes, have since crumbled to the ground. Hire a guide to explore this UNESCO World Heritage Site.
