The Michelin Guide's review
Built in the late 11C on the site of a 7C monastery, the Holy Saviour in Chora church is home to some of the finest Byzantine mosaics in the world and to remarkable 14C frescoes. The frescoes and mosaics demonstrate the same quest for realism and sensitivity as their Italian counterparts. They also illustrate the aesthetic trends of the last golden age of Byzantine art: vibrant colours, poetic faces, delicate traits, realistically draped fabrics and a proliferation of picturesque detail.
