The Michelin Guide's review
Located in the middle of rather dull surroundings, the Panaghia Pammakaristos church was the seat of the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate until 1586. Its funerary chapel has preserved a remarkable set of 14C mosaics on a gold background. On the pendentives of the cupola note the images of the prophets surrounding Christ in majesty. The apse is adorned with a superb Christ Hyperagathos, while a niche to the left depicts the Virgin Mary and St John the Baptist. Among the other mosaics, that of the Baptism of Christ (on the right-hand wall near the choir) is the oldest.
