The Michelin Guide's review
The ruins of Cong abbey, built on the foundations of an earlier 6 or 7C monastery, are well worth a visit. Rory O'Connor, last king of Ireland, died here in 1198. The handsome Romanesque porch and some of the capitals in the peaceful cloisters date from this period. Note the fisherman's house, which bears witness to the monks' good sense and practicality: the hole in the floor was used to drop lines and when the fish bit, a pulley-system sounded a bell in the kitchens!
