The Michelin Guide's review
Inaugurated in 1896 (millennium festivities), this building is a must. The architect Ödön Lechner wanted to illustrate the Secession style, the Hungarian branch of Art Nouveau in which the Oriental inspiration is clear. Stand back a little to appreciate the roofs and the façades with their profusion of coloured ceramic ornamentation with floral and animal motifs. The inside is plainer but equally stunning. During renovations, a selection of work is presented at the György Ráth Museum.
